On September 5, a user named “Kill Feminists” made comments targeting women and feminists at the University of Toronto on BlogTO, one of which read, “Next week when a feminist at the University of Toronto tries to ruin your life with false sex rape allegations, rent a gun from a gang and start firing bullets into these feminists at your nearest Women’s Studies classroom.” The threat, in addition to another of similar nature left on the same day, were reported to Toronto Police and have since been deleted, but campus officials say they are taking the anonymous messages seriously. In a letter to students and staff, university provost Cheryl Regehr wrote: “We have increased campus police presence on our three campuses, and we are monitoring the situation closely.” The ideology of the comments has stirred memories of the 1989 Montreal Massacre, when shooter Marc Lepine declared, “You’re all a bunch of feminists, and I hate feminists!” before opening fire and killing 14 women at École Polytechnique engineering school.
