Serena defeated at U.S. Open by unranked Roberta Vinci

Serena Williams’ bid to become the first player since Steffi Graf in 1988 to sweep all the Grand Slam tournaments in a single season ended on Friday at the U.S. Open semifinals. What in tarnation happened? She ran into a determined unseeded player from Italy, Roberta Vinci. Vinci, 32, took down Williams in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. She had never made it to a Grand Slam semifinal in her career and is ranked 43rd in the world.
