Serena Williams defeats sister Venus in U.S. Open quarter-finals

In their 27th matchup since joining professional circuit, Serena Williams beat her big sister Venus in three sets (6-2, 1-6, 6-3) to reach the U.S. Open semi-finals. The 33-year old tennis star, ranked No. 1 in the world, moved one step closer to what would be her fourth Grand Slam title this year. Williams would be the first player since Steffi Graf in 1988 to win all four major singles tournaments in the same year. “She’s the toughest player I’ve ever played in my life and the best person,” said Serena of her older sister following the match. “It’s going against your best friend and the greatest competitor, for me, in women’s tennis, so it was really difficult for me today.” In the semi-finals, Serena will be the unseeded Italian player Roberta Vinci.
