Olivia Benson from NBC’s long-running crime procedural Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, according to a new survey, is the ideal female character on TV. Benson, a hardened NYPD detective, has been portrayed by Mariska Hargitay for the last 16 years. Some 1,200 men and women were surveyed on their favorite female TV characters and they were presented with a choice of strong female leads like Cookie Lyon from Fox’s hit show Empire and Daenerys Targaryen from HBO’s saga Game of Thrones. Benson ranked highest among men and women, and across almost all age groups too. The only demo that she didn’t dominate was the 18-24-year-old set, which chose Daenerys Targaryen, mother of dragons, as its favorite woman character. Why, with all of the complex female characters on TV these days, did a character from a network show that debuted back in 1999 come out on top? There is an interesting explanation.
