“When you see someone in your family in danger, you don’t have time to think about it,” said 16-year-old Nour Tamimi, a Palestinian girl from the West Bank who was depicted in a dramatic photo that went viral last week. “He was beating me and I saw his hand on my face,” her 14-year-old cousin, Ahed, recalled, “so I bit him.” Nour, Ahed and other family members were photographed while reacting to an Israeli soldier who had pinned a member of their family, 12-year-old Mohammed Tamimi, to the ground during a confrontation last week. Photos and video of the explosive altercation were widely circulated online and made international headlines. The young boy seen in the photo has a broken arm and, in some images, was seen being restrained in a headlock by the Israeli soldier with a machine gun pointed at him. The incident highlights the tensions in the region and illustrated the violent encounters that can erupt between soldiers and civilians. “The pictures went viral,” Ahed said. “That’s important, so the world can see what happens.”
