In porn, white women charge higher fees for scenes with black men

Porn’s pay scale has a race problem, according to James Deen and other performers recently profiled by Vocativ. White women asked to perform with black actors often refuse to participate in “interracial” scenes because it is considered the “ultimate feat” for an actress building her career (scare quotes signifying that not all sex scenes between two races are dubbed “interracial,” just those with black men). When they do sign on, they request higher pay – often more than the standard rate for a double penetration scene. Black men, however, are not paid more to participate, and the scenes are often rife with negative, racist stereotypes. Deen, one of the world’s most famous porn stars and producers, dismissed the idea that the higher fee is based on the assumption that black men have large penises. “There are plenty of white guys in the industry whose dicks are just as big or bigger than some of the black performers,” he said, calling the problem “gross” and adding, “It’s just a skin color rate.” Black women also fall victim to the industry’s racist standards, reportedly earning only half to three-quarters of what white women make. “In some ways in mainstream porn there’s this idea that black women aren’t as marketable, that we’re not as innocent as, say, a blonde white girl,” said female performer Nikki Darling.
