Dunja Mijatović, the media freedom representative for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) has called for action to combat the increasing threats and attacks that female journalists and bloggers face online. Citing recent research that says women “face a disproportionate amount of gender-based threats and harassment on the Internet”, Mijatović argues that these attacks “pose a clear and present threat to free media and the society as a whole.” Female journalists are facing a double attack, Mijatović writes: For being a journalist, as well as a woman. She calls on governments, who should be protecting journalists, to specifically address gender discrimination, but also urged the broader media community to play a role by improving the quality of their content moderation.
