Chioma Ubogagu, a 22-year-old forward for England’s Arsenal Ladies team has been blogging her rookie season for VICE Sports. Ubogagu is a British-born American citizen who also plays for the U-23 women’s U.S. national team. In her latest entry for VICE, she covers various topics, but touches on her experience playing club soccer on a U.S. team years ago. Ubogagu writes that she played on the same team from the age of 10 right through her high school years. The father of one of her teammates was one of her biggest supporters, she recalls in the blog. “He’d sit in his folding lawn chair wearing our team-colored polo, and then right before the whistle blew, he’d holler, ‘Have your way, Chi!” Ubogagu writes that the simple phrase provided her with “immense motivation” and she still reminds herself of it to this day every time she’s about to take the field.
