Greece announces first female prime minister


On Friday, Vassiliki Thanou, the president of Greece’s supreme court, will become the prime minister of a caretaker government put in place by the office of president Prokopis Pavlopoulos. He announced that Thanou would become prime minister after a final effort for leaders to form a coalition failed and Alexis Tsipras, the outgoing prime minister, resigned last week. After being sworn in, Thanou will lead the country to elections, which are to be held next month.
