Malawi’s first female Muslim MP vows to empower women

Aisha Mamo got her start as a journalist for Radio Islam and now serves as Malawi’s first female Muslim MP in parliament. “I went to parliament with a mission to emancipate fellow women from the palms of poverty and backwardness,” she told OnIslam.net on August 27. Mamo, 40, first won her seat in June 2014 in the district of Mangochi Mkungulu. Though “some men are busy scheming to make the political landscape hard for a Muslim woman,” she is focused on fighting poverty and helping girls attain access to education – two obstacles that she feels are keeping Muslim women from participating in politics. In her interview, she vowed to “advocate for laws which are women-friendly and at the same time to help and empower fellow Muslim women through the laws which are made there.”
