On Monday, Borders, 42, lost her year-long battle with stomach cancer, which she believed was brought on by the tragic events of that day. In a Facebook post, her cousin John Borde wrote that she was a “hero” who had “unfortunately succumbed to the diseases that have ridden her body since 9/11.” He added, “In addition to losing so many friends, coworkers, and colleagues on and after that tragic day … the pains from yesteryear has found a way to resurface.” Borders had been battling depression and an addiction to crack cocaine since the attacks, causing her to lose custody over her children. She checked into rehab in 2011 and remained sober, but was diagnosed with stomach cancer last summer.
