American women use reading status as a dating tool, study finds

University of Kansas researchers found that American women “utilized their status as readers and book club members to increase their popularity in the dating field,” according to Christy Craig, a KU doctoral candidate in sociology. Her paper, “Not Just a Book Club: Gendered Sexual Identity Through the Lens of Women’s Book Clubs,” studied 53 women across 36 different book club meetings. The women ranged in age from 19 years old to 80 years old and, though the Irish women surveyed did not use book clubs as a dating tool, both American and Irish women used the gatherings to develop a sense of self through conversations in a space that allowed women to “negotiate their sexuality, particularly through conversations about what kinds of women were being portrayed in books read by the group,” Craig said.
