Was ancient India more liberal and modern than “modern” India is?

“Ancient India acknowledged that the intactness of the hymen has nothing to do with the virginity.” That is reason No. 9 on a list by the website Youth Connect that makes the case that ancient Indian culture was a society far more liberal and gender-equal. The list of reasons goes 18 deep, and points out that in ancient India, both men and women were encouraged to pursue an education, and that women in ancient India were treated with respect regardless of how beautiful they were. Ouch, modern day India — time to step up your game and start treating women better.
