Sudanese woman sentenced to fine and lashing for wearing pants to church

Nineteen-year-old Fardos Al-Toum was one of 10 female students arrested for wearing long pants and shirts to worship at a Khartoum church in Sudan on June 25. When Al-Toum appeared in court to address the citation, she was given an additional fine and ordered 20 lashes by a judge who said the clothing she was wearing then was also “indecent.” Muhamad Mustafa, who told CNN that an appeal had been filed on Al-Toum’s behalf, represents the group of women. Amnesty International U.K. started an online campaign on Al-Toum’s behalf, which has received more than 40,000 signatures.
