Entering its third and final season in 1967, television’s Batman series featured only one major female character: Catwoman, as played first by Julie Newmar, then Eartha Kitt. Yvonne Craig’s purple-and-yellow clad Batgirl hit the screen that September and joined star Adam West and Burt Ward, who played his sidekick Robin, in making campy television history. The show’s onomatopoeia-laden fight scenes often included the former ballerina, who was once the youngest member of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. She appeared in numerous other television shows and films, last returning to television from 2009 to 2011 as the voice of the character Grandma on the Nickelodeon cartoon series Olivia. Craig died as a result of breast cancer that spread to the liver, according to her family. She was 78.
