Borderless standards

Photoshopped image of model reveals how beauty perceptions vary globally

Superdrug, a U.K.-based pharmacy chain, called on graphic designers, primarily female and based in 18 different countries around the world, to Photoshop the same image of a young woman to explore how perceptions of beauty change across the world. The results, based on the Photoshopped-figure’s weight and BMI, vary quite widely. While China and Italy present ultra-thin figures, Spain reveals a technically-overweight woman. The goal of the project was “to better understand potentially unrealistic standards of beauty and to see how such pressures vary around the world,” Superdrug said.
