Breaking two barriers at once, NFL’s first woman referee and assistant coach meet on field

In a double feature of firsts for the National Football League, Jen Welter became the first woman to coach during an NFL game on August 15 — the same night Sarah Thomas became the first full-time on-field official. The two women shook hands, smiling and exchanging words on the field before the Arizona Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs kicked off. Welter was hired as an assistant coach to inside linebackers in July, and Thomas, 41, has broken barriers before as the first woman to officiate in major college football and work a bowl game.
