Germany has women-only parking spots — and they’re at the center of a longtime debate

Some of the best cars in the world are made in Germany, but so, it appears, is one of the weirdest rules of the road. In some parking lots in Germany, owners are required to set aside at least 30 percent of the spots just for women. Why? Some say it’s to make those particular parking lots bigger so that it’s easier for the women to maneuver their BMWs, Mercedes-Benzes and VWs around the parking lot … because of the silly old women are terrible drivers and men aren’t stereotype. Even more weird, the debate that’s been raging there for decades that recently was reignited: Is the policy sexist because it implies that women are bad drivers — or does it discriminate against men because it it bars them from parking in those spots. Ahh, but like all things that seem to be pure folly, the women-only parking spots were actually based on a very real issue, lost though it may be amid the heated debate: sexual assault.
