Campus rape

College demands rape victim reveal her sexual history

Virginia Wesleyan college has asked a woman who was raped on campus as a freshman to reveal every sexual partner she’s had since 2012. The startling request comes as she’s suing Virginia Wesleyan over allegations that a student who was employed by the school as a peer adviser may have given her an alcoholic beverage that was laced with another drug. She was subsequently raped by another student after drinking the beverage. That student was expelled in 2013. At issue, the school says, is the woman’s credibility. School officials want a list of sex partners and boyfriends, according to court filings, so they can corroborate with her next sexual partner the trauma she says she suffered in the wake of the crime. The woman’s lawyer, Jonathan Halperin, has refused to turn over such a list and told The Huffington Post, “This is a drug facilitated rape of a freshman woman on her third day of orientation by a stranger. To ask a victim in discovery to name every sexual partner and romantic interest she has ever had is irrelevant and outrageous and totally inappropriate.”
