Jason Stanford, a 45-year-old political consultant, and Sonia Van Meter, his 36-year-old wife, are happily married. What sets this couple apart from most is that Van Meter is one of 100 candidates that might be selected for a one-way ticket to Mars, courtesy of the Mars One Project. Van Meter indicates that if she is chosen she plans to go on the historic journey, meaning that the couple will be separated by 140 million miles and will never be in the same room together again. Stanford admits that, at first, he was concerned about how such an arrangement would affect him and his two sons, but recognizes that “marriage is not perfect, but you make it work.” He also is quick to point out that Van Meter has been dealt harsh questions about how she can abandon her family, while many male candidates are not. Although Van Meter has told her husband that if he wanted her to stay on Earth she would, but he does not want to get in the way of her dreams. A romantic, potentially intergalactic love story indeed.
