Nichelle Nichols of “Star Trek” fame set to ride aboard NASA mission

Nichelle Nichols explored the far reaches of outer space as Lt. Uhura on the original Star Trek TV series, and now, the 82-year-old actress has revealed that she’ll boldly go where no man has gone before. Well, not really — but we couldn’t help but use the famous catchphrase from the show’s open. In actuality, Nichols will be a passenger on NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). It’s an aircraft that carries a huge telescope used for looking into space at comets and even examining things close up, like the Earth’s atmosphere. “It’s an airborne observatory, a massive telescope mounted inside a 747 flying as high as possible,” she said during an AMA on Reddit, adding that the SOFIA aircraft does not leave the planet’s atmosphere.
