Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush released a walk-back statement claiming that he “misspoke” regarding women’s health issues at a conference in Nashville on Tuesday. In arguing for the defunding of Planned Parenthood, Bush said, “I’m not sure we need half a billion dollars for women’s health issues.” With the catalyst of social media, the comment instantly received backlash, including a tweet from Hillary Clinton saying, “@JebBush: You are absolutely and unequivocally wrong.” In a statement released on Wednesday, Bush claimed that his comment was referring to the “hard-to-fathom $500 million dollars in federal funding that goes to Planned Parenthood.” The senator brought up recent accusations by an anti-abortion group that Planned Parenthood sells fetal tissue for profit, something the organization has denied, and claimed that both parties agree that it should be defunded and put the funds towards “other women’s health organizations.” To back up his point further, he later responded to Hillary’s tweet by saying, “What’s absolutely, unequivocally wrong is giving taxpayer $ to an org whose practices show no regard for lives of unborn.”
