Vote to defund Planned Parenthood fails in the Senate

In a 53-46 vote on Monday evening, Senate Democrats blocked a proposal to defund Planned Parenthood. The vote was split almost exactly on party lines, but two Democratic senators — Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Joe Donelly of Indiana  — crossed the aisle and voted with Republicans to defund. The legislation was sponsored by Joni Ernst of Iowa and came in the wake of controversial “sting” videos released by an anti-abortion activist group, which was banned by a court from releasing any new videos.
