This week, Canada legalized the abortion pill, or RU-486, which will be sold under the name Mifegymiso. Versions of RU-486–a prescription-only medication that can induce an abortion up to 10 weeks after conception–are already on the market in about 60 countries; it’s been available in the U.S. for 15 years. Mifegysimo had been pending approval since 2012, and is expected to become available to Canadian women next year. “It’s long overdue that Canadian women also have access to the gold standard for medical abortion care,” the president of Canada’s National Abortion Federation told the BBC.
