Fire up your browser! Netflix just announced a deal with actress and director Angelina Jolie Pitt to produce and direct an original film adaptation of the memoir First They Killed My Father. Written by Loung Ung, the memoir details her life as a child soldier during the Khmer Rouge period in Cambodia in the mid-1970s, when nearly 2 million people were killed. The country has long been on Jolie Pitt’s radar — her first adopted son was born in Cambodia. The humanitarian actress and director said she was “deeply affected” by Ung’s book, and that they spent several years together adapting it for the screen, saying “films like this are hard to watch but important to see.”
