Republican bill would allow single women to be fired for getting pregnant

After the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in favor of same-sex marriage, Republican lawmakers are firing back by pushing the First Amendment Defense Act which would allow employers to fire single women for getting pregnant. “It’s just allowing people to continue to believe the way they do,” the House bill’s author, Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho), told The Huffington Post. According to the Huffington Post, the First Amendment Defense Act, “prohibits the federal government from taking discriminatory action against a person—which is defined to include for-profit corporations—acting in accordance with a religious belief that favors so-called traditional marriage.” Because the bill would protect those who believe in “traditional marriage,” Ian Thompson with the American Civil Liberties Union said it “clearly encompasses discrimination against single mothers.”
