Ayyan Ali, a 21-year-old supermodel from Pakistan was released from the notorious maximum security Adiala jail in Rawalpindi on Thursday after a Lahore court granted her bail. Ali has been locked up there since mid-March when she was arrested in an Islamabad airport VIP lounge carrying more than $500,000 concealed in her luggage. The case and Ali’s numerous court appearances triggered a media frenzy in Pakistan, with news channels at times devoting wall-to-wall coverage to her legal drama. She’s been charged with money-smuggling, an accusation that she has, through her lawyers, denied. Ali, who’s been a fixture on fashion runways there and as a model in ads for Calvin Klein, Coca-Cola and L’Oreal, among other global brands, faces as much as 14 years in prison if she’s convicted.
