A woman with ties to Islamic extremists convicted of murdering an American teacher with a butcher knife at a high-end Abu Dhabi mall was put to death by the United Arab Emirates on Monday. Alaa Bader Abdullah al-Hashemi’s execution comes only two weeks after the Federal Supreme Court convicted the 30-year-old Emirati mother of six of deliberately murdering 47-year-old teacher Ibolya Ryan in a mall restroom stall last year. Ryan, a mother of three and previously an elementary school teacher in Dencher, was living in Abu Dhabi with her 11 year-old twins at the time. Al-Hashemi later also planted a homemade bomb outside of the home of another American, but the bomb never detonated. The verdict was not for appeal, and her execution was personally approved by the king of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The case has reverberated throughout the UAE, a Western-allied seven-state federation, including the commercial hub of Dubai, where violent crimes as well as executions are rare.
