Photographer Brandon Stanton has been running the “Humans of New York” project for five years now, and it’s become quite popular for the emotional photos his website and Facebook page feature. Over the holiday weekend, he posted an image of a distraught-looking boy that caught the attention of 2016 Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton. The photo shows a boy who appears to be on the verge of tears, deep in thought and touching his forehead. “I’m homosexual and I’m afraid about what my future will be and that people won’t like me,” the caption below the photo reads. Within two hours of being posted, the photo had stopped Hillary Clinton in her tracks. She wrote a poignant message in response. “Prediction from a grown-up: Your future is going to be amazing. You will surprise yourself with what you’re capable of and the incredible things you go on to do. Find the people who love and believe in you — there will be lots of them. -H” the message reads and is signed with an “H” indicating that Hillary, not one of her campaign staffers, posted the response.
