This year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup might well prove to be the most popular in history. In terms of U.S. viewership, in particular, the numbers have been unprecedented: the semi-finals match that saw the U.S. Women’s National Team smash Germany 2-0 drew an average audience of 8.4 million viewers on FOX, setting a new U.S. viewership record as the most-watched semi-finals match ever. That also makes it the third-most watched women’s soccer game of all time. To put that in some perspective: the deciding Game 6 of the NHL Stanley Cup Final drew 7.6 million viewers. The final game will air on Sunday, July 5th and pit the U.S. against Japan, which defeated England 2-1 in Wednesday’s semi-final. While the final takes place over a holiday weekend, it’s likely that the match will set a new massive viewer record — the question is just how high exactly.
