California passes bill to give professional cheerleaders fair pay

The California State Senate approved a bill this week that would make professional cheerleaders sports team employees. The bill, AB202, would require all cheerleaders working for professional sports teams in California to be paid at least minimum wage, to receive pay for sick leave, and overtime, just like other team employees. According to the Associated Press, Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez said cheerleaders deserve the same level of respect and dignity as other team employees. The bill passed 26-8 with bipartisan support and awaits being signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown.
