Anisa Rasooli was nominated this week by President Ashraf Ghani to be Afghanistan’s first female Supreme Court judge. Rasooli is head of the Afghan Women Judges Association, as well as a former juvenile court judge. She is not only the first female, but the only female nominated to Afghanistan’s nine-member bench. President Ghani announced the news June 30, during a gathering of women’s rights activists and diplomats, and the nomination must be approved by parliament. In Kabul, earlier in June, a group of clerics protested against any possible appointments of a female judge to the Supreme Court, but this appointment comes after Ghani and other lawmakers have been consistently appointing women to government positions.
