Data could’ve predicted Bristol Palin’s shocking pregnancy

Bristol Palin just announced some shocking news — the former teen abstinence spokesperson is pregnant, and like her first pregnancy back in 2008, this one seems unintended. In a blunt blog post on Thursday, the 24-year-old Palin said, “Honestly, I’ve been trying to keep my chin up on this one … I know this has been, and will be, a huge disappointment to my family, to my close friends, and to many of you.” Palin has not specified how far along she is, or named the father, though the pregnancy follows news that she canceled her May wedding to Dakota Meyer. Perhaps we should’ve seen it coming. According to research from the Guttmacher Institute Yahoo reports, women who have one unintended pregnancy are more likely to have another, as they have higher overall fertility compared with other women. Data also shows that currently, over half of U.S. pregnancies are unintended, though teenage pregnancy rates are on the decline. Bill Albert, chief program officer for The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy reportedly told Yahoo, “The face of unplanned pregnancy looks a lot like Bristol Palin—a single woman in her 20s.”
