A top Bollywood director was arrested over the weekend after a U.S. woman accused him of rape. Mahmood Farooqui, who recently co-directed the film Peepli with his wife, was reportedly taken into custody by police on Saturday after the allegations emerged. A 30-year-old scholar from the U.S. reportedly filed the charges at the U.S. embassy in New Delhi. She alleged that the sexual assault took place when she visited Farooqui’s home in March. Anusha Rizvi, Farooqui’s wife, issued a statement saying the charges are “manipulated and false” and vowed the couple would fight the case in court.
