Sweden comes up with a new word for female masturbation

Sweden, always known as a global pioneer when it comes to gender equality, decided to address its latest gender disparity: the lack of words to describe female masturbation. While men have about a 100 pages of Urban Dictionary expressions worth to choose from, women have been drastically underserved in the vocabulary of self-love. So last year, the Swedish Association for Sexual Education (RFSU) launched a competition asking people to come up with a new phrase to help promote an “open, positive view of sex and relationship issues.” In  a statement, the group wrote: “Historically, women’s sexuality and not least female masturbation has been taboo. Women are not expected to have desires and be turned on in the same way as men, which is reflected in the lack of words [for masturbation].” Winner of the competition was “klittra”– selected by public vote after they received some 200 entries. “Klittra” is a combination of  the Swedish words  for ‘clitoris’ and ‘glitter’ (so — “clitter” — if you will) and was adapted by the RFSU at its congress earlier this week.
