Never one to be shy about speaking her mind, Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren lashed out at ageism in Hollywood during an interview at The Wrap’s New York Power Breakfast on Tuesday. And she didn’t mince words. When asked about Maggie Gyllenhaal’s claim that she was once turned down from playing the love interest of a 55-year-old actor because she’s “too old,” Mirren, who’s 70, responded, “It’s f**king outrageous. It’s ridiculous.” The interview was conducted in front of a live audience, which erupted in applause upon hearing Mirren’s candid response. As the applause wound down, Mirren added, “Honestly … I mean, it’s annoying.” She pointed out that moviegoers watched James Bond get “more and more geriatric” as his girlfriends got younger and younger. Mirren, who recently won a Tony Award for her role in The Audience, went on to touch on a number of other hot topics in the interview, including why she doesn’t like being referred to as “sexual.”
