Gaming conference unveils spate of new kickass lady characters

Finally! Some good news about women and gaming: The number of female videogame heroes is on the rise. The news from the Electronic Entertainment Expo is that a number of new games will feature a lead female character. Emily Kaldwin stars as an assassin in Bethesda Softworks’ Dishonored 2; Rae, a blind girl, is the force behind Microsoft’s Beyond Eyes and Sony’s Horizon: Zero Dawn tells the story of a female hunter in a planet full of mechanical dinosaurs. To boot, EA Sports’ Fifa 16 will add women’s teams to the soccer field.  Lara Croft of Tomb Raider will have some competition for a change — and that’s a good thing.
