Five years later, the death of “Golden Girls” star goes viral

An unusual trending topic emerged Thursday on Facebook and Twitter—the death of “Golden Girls” star Rue McClanahan, who passed away five years ago. McClanahan’s passing occurred June 3, 2010, after she suffered a stroke at the age of 76. Oddly, this news first went viral four years later, on June 10, 2014. According to a Washington Post report, this phenomenon likely occurred due to a social media post from a dedicated fan with a large following. Interestingly, those taking part in Thursday’s trend somehow missed catching the 2010 date on the articles they posted about McClanahan’s death, causing some to speculate whether she “re-died” on Twitter.
