Turns out it’s not just postmenopausal whales that show exemplary leadership of their herd. A study conducted by a consulting group surveyed more than 6,000 European professionals and found that those who were most likely to possess strategic leadership skills, including attributes such as creative thinking and accepting of honest feedback, were women above age 55. Normally a demographic pool neglected by human resource departments of companies big and small, this study indicates that firms would do best to leverage the talents of this previously “invisible” group. In fact, in addition to being overlooked, women above 55 are typically the first group companies look to lay off or offer early retirement packages to when it’s time for cutbacks.
