Syrian teen advocates for girls’ education


Sixteen-year-old Muzoon Almellehan may seem quiet at first, but she has been dubbed “the Malala of Za’atari” for her vocal support for girls’ education and prevention of girls’ early marriages in a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan. Given the volatile geopolitical climate of the region, many families think taking their daughters out of school and marrying them off will provide economic and physical security for them. However, doing so often results in abusive relationships and uncertain futures for girls and young women. Through her direct work with international organizations, Muzoon has emerged a powerful grassroots activist who has convinced many young girls and their families of the benefits of staying in school.
