A woman from Maryland died over the weekend in New York City after allegedly receiving a botched cosmetic procedure performed on her buttocks by an apparently unlicensed doctor. Kelly Mayhew and her mother reportedly drove seven hours to Queens from Maryland to visit the home of an alleged fraudulent plastic surgeon who performs procedures in her basement. Mayhew allegedly received silicone injections in her buttocks. Not long afterwards, the 34-year-old began having difficulties breathing. Her mother reportedly tried to administer CPR, but Mayhew wasn’t responding, so was rushed to a local hospital where she later died. According to sources reached by The Daily Beast, Mayhew had received numerous cosmetic procedures aimed at enhancing her derrière in the past. Mayhew, reports said, was in Queens because the price was drastically lower than a licensed doctor would charge for the procedure. According to a physician writing in the New York Daily News, many fraudulent doctors are using technique known as “free silicone.” The technique can have deadly consequences and Mayhew’s case serves as a cautionary tale demonstrating why these sorts of procedures should be avoided.
