Today marks filmmaker and director Angelina Jolie Pitt’s 40th birthday. A staple at our annual Women in the World Summits (she has attended three of them), Jolie Pitt has roused our global audience with her calls for action and her compelling stories.

2015: A CALL TO ARMS

Jolie Pitt gave a passionate speech on women’s rights in war-torn regions like Syria and Iraq. “Women are still treated as secondary issues. It is still far too easy and accepted for leaders to ignore uncomfortable truths, from FGM (female genital mutilation) to child marriage. It is still the norm for women to be excluded from the peace process. Women, we know, are the first to be affected by war, and the last to be taken into account when it ends,” she said. “Everyone in this room knows an outcry is not enough. We need to change attitudes around the world. We have a particular responsibility.”

2013: MALALA UNDAUNTED

Jolie Pitt made a heartfelt tribute to the young Pakistani activist, who made a special appearance via video to talk about her new education fund. “The only thing that mattered to Malala was school,” Jolie Pitt told the packed audience. “They shot her at point-blank range in the head—and made her stronger.”

Jolie Pitt shared the story of Dr. Hawa Abdi, the brave obstetrician whose medical camp in Somalia has saved thousands of lives. Jolie Pitt said that Dr. Abdi’s story “illuminates the nightmare of tens of millions around the world … the internally displaced and the ones homeless within their homelands.”
