In a column published by Fox News, Mary Cheney — a political consultant in D.C. and daughter of Dick Cheney, who also happens to be a Republican and married to a woman — accused conservatives who oppose gay marriage, but champion family values, of hypocrisy. ““The Republican Party has always claimed to be in favor of certain key principles including, support for individual liberty, personal responsibility and the belief that strong families are the cornerstone of our society,” she wrote. “This is exactly why more leaders of the party should embrace the idea of marriage equality.” Gay marriage, Cheney argues, would “increase relationship stability” and “strengthen families” — something conservatives should be able to get behind. And an increasing number have: in March, 300 Republicans reportedly filed an amicus brief supporting the legalization of same-sex marriage.
