Former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee went on a weird, transphobic rant at the 2015 National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, earlier this year. A video of the event that has now surfaced online shows Huckabee ‘joking’ that “I wish that someone told me that when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in PE. I’m pretty sure that I would have found my feminine side and said, ‘Coach, I think I’d rather shower with the girls today.’” Huckabee added there was “something inherently wrong about forcing little children to be a part of this social experiment.” As Vox points out, Huckabee’s “joke” plays on the very damaging and pervasive myth based on an unfounded conservative fear that sexual predators would take advantage of trans-friendly laws to prey on women or girls. Over the past year, several states have pushed or passed bills to prevent trans people from using the bathrooms that matches their gender identity. In the 12 states where protections are in place for trans people, however, not a single case of this feared voyeurism has been reported. On the other hand, in 31 states, it is legal to discriminate against trans people through employment, housing, or public accommodations — this kind of discrimination occurs on a daily basis. Perhaps that is what Huckabee should be worried about.
