New law requires Michigan doctors to warn women with high risk of breast cancer

Dense breast tissue can make breast cancer difficult to detect; doctors can have trouble interpreting the mammograms of women with denser-than-average breasts. On Monday, a law will go into effect in the state of Michigan that will require doctors to tell women, in writing, if they have dense breast tissue and should get extra testing. “The Michigan law is designed to facilitate communication between the results of the mammogram, whether or not they have dense breasts, and to discuss that with their physician,” a radiologist told Michigan TV station WWMT.
