In an interview with The Wrap, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal revealed that a producer told her that, at age 37, she was too old to play the love interest of a 55-year old actor. “It was astonishing to me. It made me feel bad, and then it made feel angry, and then it made me laugh,” Gyllenhaal said. Her revelation comes at a time when the ACLU is demanding a state and federal investigation into the “rampant discrimination” faced by women in the film industry. On top of that, the 2015 Cannes Film Festival was supposed to be all about women, but things got got shook up by outrage over its “high heels only” policy and news that the makers of Sicario revealed they were under pressure to change their lead (a female FBI agent) to a male character. Gyllenhaal remains hopeful, however. “A lot of actresses are doing incredible work right now, playing real women, complicated women,” she told The Wrap. “I don’t feel despairing at all. And I’m more looking with hope for something fascinating.”
