Beloved author Judy Blume is set to release her first novel for adults in 17 years, In the Unlikely Event, in early June. It’s set in the 1950s, when Blume was a young teen, and loosely based on a trio of plane crashes that took place in Blume’s hometown of Elizabeth, New Jersey, over a two-month period in 1951 and 1952. Blume is best known for depicting the inner lives of preteen girls in classics like Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, but her resume also includes three novels for adults. Blume, 77, says this will be her last book. And though it’s written for adults, its narrator is a 15-year-old girl.
