“Gratuitous” rape scene in “Game of Thrones” triggers outrage from many, including a senator

“OK, I’m done with Game of Thrones. Water Garden, stupid. Gratuitous rape scene disgusting and unacceptable. It was a rocky ride that just ended,” U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill of Missouri wrote on Twitter after watching the latest episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones. The Democratic senator’s exasperated remark joined a cascade of criticism from fans of the show. The scene in question depicted Ramsay Snow raping his new wife, Sansa Stark, on their wedding night as her childhood friend, Theon Greyjoy, was forced to watch. TV critics and fans alike criticized the brutal scene for being unnecessary and an uninspired departure from the source material, George R.R. Martin’s series of A Song of Ice and Fire novels.
