Columbia student carries mattress to awards ceremony in protest of campus rape

Emma Sulkowicz has been lugging her mattress around the Columbia University campus throughout the entire academic year—an artistic representation of the weight she has borne since she was allegedly raped in her dorm room by a fellow student. Earlier this year, Sulkowicz vowed to carry the mattress until her alleged rapist was expelled from Columbia, a demand that was not met by the university. In advance of Columbia’s commencement, Sulkowicz brought her mattress to Tuesday’s College Class Day procession, which honors individual students in the arts and sciences. With the help of some friends, Sulkowicz carried her mattress onstage to the sound of applause.
