In an interview to promote her new film Carol, which debuts at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17, Australian actress Cate Blanchett let a previously unknown personal detail slip: she’s been in same-sex relationships. “Yes, many times,” she responded when asked about it by Variety. Blanchett, who’s married to Andrew Upton, spoke in greater detail about her latest film, which is a lesbian romance, and the project’s long and unlikely road to the big screen. It took about 15 years to make the movie and Blanchett, 45, said she thought it might never see the light of day. She also touched on the lack of gender equality in Hollywood and how that has manifest in the types of male-dominated stories that end up being produced. She said neglecting women audiences is bad business. “It’s not serving the audience. People want to see good films. We should have equal access to the multiplexes,” Blanchett said.
